Recommended EquipmentJetskiing
is classed as a semi-immersion watersport. Therefore you need
to ensure that you are properly clothed at all times to ensure that the
body is protected from the combined effects of Speed, Sun, Wind and
Water. It
is also recommended that all users of personal watercraft wear
suitable clothing to protect against any potential contact
with
the Jet thrust of these machines. Such contact can be potentially
dangerous.
This section advises all users of the simple steps they can take to be prepared for a safe and fun day out on the water.
Recommended Equipment A Means for calling for help. We recommend a VHF Radio, although a mobile phone (in waterproof bag) is better then no communication at all. Flare Pack. Spare Lanyard Tools Money (for Food, Drink and Fuel) GPS or Compass Spare Batteries for all your equipment (Fully charged!) Suncream Please Note: A VHF Radio will allow you to alert all VHF Users at Sea and will additionally allow search and rescue teams to locate you via your signal. A mobile phone will only allow you to talk to one person and the signal may not be that good at sea. Operation of a VHF radio requires a operators certificate and the radio itself will need to be licensed with OFCOM. However, in an emergency any person may use a VHF Radio to alert the emergency services. People have died at sea becuase other passengers were afraid to use the VHF Radio. If you are unsure of how to use the equipment, get trained or ask the owner what you should do in the event of an emergency. What Should you wear when operating a Personal watercraft? This depends on personal taste. The picture on the left shows a typical winter outfit. The rider is wearing a Drysuit, Neoprene boots and gloves. In addition a bouyancy aid is worn over the drysuit. As in the case of the picture you can take the option of wearing a helmet which not only protects your head but also keeps out the cold. Underneath the drysuit the user would normally wear some loose fitting clothing that should "wick" away any sweat or moisture. Other users prefer to wear a wetsuit although, please ensure that you purchase the correct thickness for the type of weather you will be riding in. Most Watersport shops will advise you on the correct wetsuit/drysuit to purchase. Most riders will have different suits for different seasons. It is not recommended to Jetski in shorts/Swimgear only. This offers no protection to the effects of Jet thrust. The minimum recommended would be a shorty style wetsuit. In addition a buoyancy aid should always be worn. It is a club requirement that all riders on a club event wear a suitable bouyancy aid. QUICK LINKS
