Ferry Point Slipway

This is the slipway approach road. During busy times, please keep this road clear to ensure that the slipway is kept uncongested. It will help reduce your wait if you prepare your ski/power boat before you enter this area.
Also when recovering, please do not park in this road either as you will hamper traffic. Please be considerate to all users of the slipway.
Slipway Approach
This is a view of the Slipway from the Harbour Masters Office. The Ferry Boat Inn is directly infront of the camera with the slipway running left to right.
Incidentally, behind the camera is the access to the Hayling Island Ferry.
At high water, the tide reaches the striped barrier.
This Shot shows how long the slipway can get at low water. A 4x4 is launching a Power Boat but it is not necessary to have a 4x4 if you are launching Personal Watercraft or even some Power boats whilst on the slipway. The slipway is very wide and is of concrete construction. If using a 2WD vehicle, care should be taken during very low spring tides as the slipway runs to stones.

Shot is taken at Low water, during a spring tide. As you can see the
slipway clearly runs out into stones. Caution is required here for
owners of 2 wheel drive vehicles. If you manage to put your driven
wheels on this beach area you may have trouble with traction. If you
recovering when the tide is this low and your vehicle would have to
drive the driven wheels onto the beach it would be best to recover with a rope
to
extend the tow to ensure the vehicle remains firmly on the slipway to
ensure good traction.
Here
are some
examples of 4x4
vehicles that are beach launching and recovering. Do not attempt this
is a normal 2 wheel drive car. Some people do and this provides
excellent entertainment for customers at the Ferry Boat Inn who will be
watching!
The
ramp is wide
enough to
accommodate two vehicles. However, The Langstone Harbour Master
recommends that only a single vehicle uses the slipway at a time. This
is good practice and ensures everyone's safety. Please be patient
whilst people carry out the relevant launch / recovery procedures.
A couple of shots of the slipway demonstrating the width and construction of the slipway. As you can see it is of a very solid construction having been an old ferry slipway in past years.
